St Cecilia’s Catholic Church: A Coastal Pillar of Faith in Port Hedland

Welcome to St Cecilia’s Catholic Church, a historic and vibrant parish deeply rooted in the heart of the Pilbara region. Located at 35 Sutherland Street, Port Hedland, Western Australia, our church offers a spiritual home to locals and visitors, combining a rich heritage with a welcoming community atmosphere.
A Legacy Built by Hand
Our parish story is one of resilience. While the first Mass in Port Hedland was celebrated in a mechanics’ hall, the dedicated community desired a proper sanctuary. The current church, completed in 1964, stands as a monumental achievement of local volunteers who hand-made over 86,000 concrete bricks to construct the building and the adjacent school. Its simple, robust design and high-set windows, crafted to catch the coastal breeze, reflect the practical spirit of the Pilbara.
Community, Youth, and Education

St Cecilia’s is not just a building; it is a faith-sharing family. We operate in close partnership with St John the Baptist Parish in South Hedland, forming a unified, supportive Catholic community across the two towns. Our parish shares its grounds with St Cecilia’s Catholic Primary School, fostering strong links between faith and education for the next generation.
