Parish Information

Mission

History

St Dominic’s parish was carved out from Corpus Christi  Parish, Glenroy, in 1959. The Josephite Sisters were granted 10 acres of land to build the church and the school. The parish was created due to the influx of the migrants in Broadmeadows. Fr Michael Flanagan was the first Parish Priest  at St Dominic’s.

The Parish Today

The parish has been predominantly an immigrant parish, with about 45 Nationalities. Multicultural Sunday Is celebrated every year as a sign of Unity and diversity.

The major communities here are the Australians, Filipinos, Vietnamese, Spanish Islanders, Sri Lankans, Timorese, Sri Lanka’s and Indians. Currently, the Middle East community is fast growing, mostly from Iraq, etc. We also have a growing presence of Africans in the parish, mostly from Nigeria, East Africa,  and Sierra Leone.

The population of the Parish,  like other urban parishes , is hard to tell the actual numbers due to seasonal fluctuations in Mass attendances. Based  on the recent Mass count of 2023 was 350.

It’s good to mention that since covid 19 the Mass attendances have gone down.

St Dominic’s Parish Community is basically a prayerful and charitable one, something that has enabled us to survive in these hard times.

Pastorally, we have three Priests that cutters for the major language communities, predominantly, the English, Spanish and Vietnamese speaking.

Mass

We have English and Spanish Mass every Sunday, while Vietnamese have it on the 1st and 3rd Sundays.

The Nigerian (Igbo) Community prays on every last Sunday of the month.

Fr Peter as a Spiritan resident also offers Mass and Pastoral services in Brookview and Mclellan Nursing homes.

There are other Nursing Homes around which rely on our services whenever they are stranded.

Schools

There are also two schools that are under St Dominic’s Parish namely, St. Dominics and Penola.
